THE BUSINESS CASE

The story in focus

IBM announced self-hosted deployment for IBM Bob, its agentic software development platform. The option lets enterprises run AI software development and modernisation on premises, private cloud, sovereign cloud and air-gapped environments, keeping sensitive code and data within controlled infrastructure. IBM cites data residency and sovereignty requirements as key drivers.

  • IBM Bob can now be deployed on customer-managed infrastructure including air-gapped environments.
  • The option is aimed at regulated industries with strict security, compliance and data residency needs.
  • IBM cites an IBV report finding 68% of surveyed executives face challenges meeting data residency and sovereignty requirements across geographies.

Deployment scope and enterprise drivers

IBM said the self-hosted version of Bob is designed for organisations that require greater control over data residency, security policies, AI governance and software development workflows. The platform can run in on-premises, private-cloud, sovereign-cloud and air-gapped environments, allowing enterprises to keep code, application context and data where they already reside.

The company positions the offering against AI coding tools that require data to be moved to external services. IBM said enterprises can run supported models on premises, including in air-gapped settings, using models they have licensed, or connect Bob to supported external model services through hybrid configurations.

Sovereignty pressure and market forecast

IBM pointed to data residency and sovereignty requirements as a barrier to AI adoption. It cited a June 2026 IBM Institute for Business Value report, The Calculus of AI Sovereignty, which found that 68% of surveyed executives say meeting data residency and sovereignty requirements across geographies is challenging.

IBM also cited a Futurum Research report projecting that hybrid and edge deployments will capture 44% of the AI infrastructure market by 2030, while public cloud share is projected to decline to 46% in that timeframe. Those figures are forecasts, not outcomes.

Company positioning

Neel Sundaresan, GM of AI and Automation at IBM, said the future of enterprise AI will depend on security, governance and sovereignty, and that organisations need AI operating inside environments they control. IBM describes Bob as an agentic software development platform intended to help teams apply AI across software delivery and modernisation, not only code generation.

What environments can IBM Bob run in with the self-hosted option?

IBM said self-hosted Bob can run in on-premises, private-cloud, sovereign-cloud and air-gapped environments under customer control, using licensed models on premises or supported external model services through hybrid configurations.
