THE BUSINESS CASE

The story in focus

Ars Technica, citing the Financial Times, reports that Tesla is pivoting its growth strategy toward software and AI services. Full Self-Driving subscriptions reached 1.7 million active users globally, up 67% year over year, though the company has not won approval for fully autonomous FSD.

  • FSD subscriptions reached 1.7 million active users globally, up 67% from a year earlier.
  • More than 75% of new Teslas sold in North America included supervised FSD.
  • Tesla reported its largest car order backlog in four years.
  • Tesla confirmed it is exploring a merger with SpaceX.
  • Tesla has not won approval for fully autonomous FSD.

Subscription growth and revenue mix

Ars Technica, citing a Financial Times report, says Tesla is shifting toward software and AI services as it seeks recurring revenue. The company reported 1.7 million active FSD subscriptions globally, a 67% year-over-year increase, and said more than 75% of new Teslas sold in North America came with the supervised version of the system.

Tesla has not disclosed how much recurring revenue FSD generates. The car business still accounts for about 75% of total revenue, leaving it central to funding Tesla's AI spending as it competes with larger technology rivals.

Backlog, merger and regulatory limits

At an earnings briefing, Tesla said it had its largest car order backlog in four years. Ars Technica reports that five days after a promotional event, the company confirmed it was exploring a merger with SpaceX, a move the report says could accelerate autonomous-driving research by combining AI, materials and manufacturing work.

FSD remains supervised and requires a human driver. Tesla has yet to win approval for a fully autonomous version. The supervised system is approved in the Netherlands and several other European countries, but a vote by EU member states on wider rollout has been delayed until December.

Competitive pressure

The shift comes as Chinese manufacturers lead electric vehicle sales and invest heavily in software and autonomy. Tesla's earlier goal of 20 million annual vehicle sales by 2030 has been reduced to 5 million, a target that remains ambitious given deliveries of 1.6 million last year, according to the report.
