  • Telegraph Media Group did not confirm the number of redundancies

Restructuring announced

The Daily Telegraph's owner has begun a restructuring that will change the title from a British newspaper into what its CEO described as a global, AI-powered premium media and intelligence business. According to The Guardian, the plan was set out in an all-company briefing and email on Friday morning.

Newsroom insiders told The Guardian they expected as many as 100 people to lose their jobs. Some staff were informed on Thursday and others on Friday, and the culture and sports departments were said to be particularly affected. Telegraph Media Group would not confirm the number of redundancies. A spokesperson said a formal consultation process had started and described the choices as difficult but necessary.

Revenue and audience plans

Chief executive Carolin Hulshoff Pol wrote that the next chapter would depend on new revenue streams, including video, audio, puzzles, events, B2B, licensing, commerce and new products, and on growing the audience internationally, especially in foreign affairs, defence and business.

She said the long sale process had limited the Telegraph's ability to invest and adapt, and that the media and technology landscape had changed quickly. Axel Springer bought the Telegraph for £575m in June. Hulshoff Pol said the organisation would use AI while valuing judgment, originality, courage and trust.

What does the Telegraph restructuring involve?

The Guardian reports that Axel Springer's Telegraph Media Group announced an all-company restructuring and a formal consultation. Staff were told of plans for a global, AI-focused business; insiders expect up to 100 redundancies, which the publisher would not confirm.
