What the restructuring covers

Squarespace is reducing its global workforce by approximately 19%, a cut of around 300 positions from a base of about 1,800 employees. A public relations specialist representing the company confirmed the figure to TechCrunch after The Verge initially reported the layoffs.

In a statement, the representative said the changes are meant to simplify how the company operates, sharpen its priorities and let it move faster as it positions itself for what it describes as its next phase of growth. The company also said departing employees would receive 16 weeks of base pay and healthcare benefits into May 2027.

Context around the move

Squarespace was founded in 2004 and went public in 2021. It later returned to private ownership through a private equity deal in 2024. The company announced an AI website-building tool called Blueprint in 2024 and has more recently promoted Forma, an AI-native platform that users can join via a waitlist.

The layoffs come as website-building tools increasingly incorporate generative AI, which can produce front-end designs from short prompts. Rival Wix acquired Base44 for $80 million, and Google recently introduced a feature for quickly generating interface designs, according to the report.

How many Squarespace employees are affected by the layoffs?

About 300 employees are affected, representing approximately 19% of Squarespace's roughly 1,800-person global workforce, according to a company representative.
