What Rivian disclosed

Rivian is licensing elements of its AI voice assistant technology to Volkswagen Group within the companies' existing joint venture, according to TechCrunch, which cited Rivian's third-quarter investor presentation released Thursday. The assistant recently reached Rivian's own vehicles.

The financial terms remain undisclosed. Rivian did not specify licensing fees, payment terms or which Volkswagen models will carry the technology.

Possible Volkswagen debut

TechCrunch reported the assistant could first appear in Volkswagen's low-cost EV, the ID EVERY1. That small four-door hatchback is slated to become the first VW vehicle to use Rivian's software and electrical architecture under the venture.

The joint venture, formalized through an independent company that began operating in November 2024, initially covered Rivian's electrical architecture and software for Volkswagen's next-generation vehicles. Volkswagen initially committed up to $5 billion and later raised the figure to up to $5.8 billion by 2027.

Development timeline

Rivian spent two years developing the assistant before unveiling it in 2025, and the work ran longer than expected. The assistant rolled out in May 2026 to the R1S SUV and R1T pickup and in October 2026 to the midsize R2 SUV.

Rivian said the licensing expansion demonstrates the extensibility of the platform it built in-house, per TechCrunch. The company has tied the assistant to a broader vertical-integration strategy described in the same investor presentation.
